If someone searches for your business — or any business like yours — Google is almost certainly the first place they look. And if you're not showing up in those results, you're handing customers straight to your competitors.
I've worked with dozens of business owners in Kochi and across India who didn't realise their business wasn't even on Google yet. Some assumed it happened automatically. It doesn't. You have to do it yourself — and it takes less than 20 minutes.
Here's the thing: a Google Business Profile (formerly called Google My Business) puts your business on Google Search, Google Maps, and the local pack — that box of three businesses that shows up near the top of search results. It's free. It works. And once it's set up properly, it keeps bringing in customers without you spending a rupee on ads.
This guide walks you through the whole process, step by step, in plain English. No technical knowledge needed.
A Google Business Profile is your business's free listing on Google. When someone searches "dentist near me" or "best bakery in Kochi," the businesses that appear with a location pin, photos, reviews, and opening hours — those all have Google Business Profiles.
Think of it as your storefront on the internet's most visited platform. It shows your phone number, address, website, hours, photos, and customer reviews — all in one place, right in Google Search.
Without one, you're invisible to anyone who doesn't already know your name. With one, you're showing up exactly when people are actively searching for what you offer. That's the difference between a cold prospect and a ready-to-buy customer.
I've seen well-established businesses with fantastic services lose walk-in traffic simply because they didn't have a Google listing. Don't let that be you.
Before you jump in, gather these things so the process goes smoothly:
Got those? Good. Let's build your profile.
Follow these steps exactly and you'll have your listing ready to go in one sitting.
Open your browser and visit business.google.com — then sign in with your Google account to get started.
Type your business name exactly as it appears on your signage. If Google finds an existing listing, claim it — otherwise start fresh.
Pick the primary category that best describes what you do (e.g. Restaurant, Plumber, SEO Agency). You can add more categories later.
Enter a street address if customers come to you, or set a service area by city/radius if you go to your customers instead.
Enter your phone number and website URL so customers can reach you directly from your Google listing.
Google will ask you to prove ownership — via video, postcard, phone or email. Follow the prompts and don't skip this step.
Fill in opening hours, photos, a business description and your services. A fully complete profile ranks far better in local search.
This is the step where people get stuck. Google wants to make sure you're a real business, so they'll ask you to verify ownership before your listing goes fully live.
The verification method Google offers depends on your business type and location. Here are the options you might see:
Don't try to rush the process or skip it — unverified profiles don't show up properly in local search results. Just follow what Google asks, and you'll be through it.
One thing I see people trip up on: if Google asks for a video, record it in good lighting and make sure your business signage is clearly visible. That's usually why videos get rejected — poor lighting or no visible sign.
Getting verified is just the beginning. A bare-bones listing won't rank well. Here's what to do right after you're set up to make your business profile actually work for you:
Setting up is just step one. I help local businesses in Kochi and across India optimise, manage, and grow their Google Business Profile so they actually show up where customers are searching.
Get Help with Your GBP →Yes, completely free. You don't need to pay anything to set up or maintain a Google Business Profile. Google charges nothing for the listing itself — it's one of the best free tools available to local businesses.
It depends on the verification method Google assigns you. Video verification is often the quickest — sometimes processed within a few hours to a couple of days. Postcard verification usually takes 5–14 days for the card to arrive. Phone and email verification, when available, can be instant.
Yes. If you serve customers at their location rather than at a fixed premises — like a plumber or mobile cleaner — you can set a service area instead of displaying a street address. You still need to enter an address for verification purposes, but it won't be shown publicly.
Google sometimes auto-generates listings from publicly available data. If your business already appears, you can claim that existing listing rather than creating a new one. Search for your business name on Google Maps and look for the Claim this business option.
Completing every section of your profile is the first step — businesses with complete profiles rank significantly better. After that, collecting genuine customer reviews, posting regular updates, and keeping your hours accurate all contribute to higher placement in local search results.
Yes. Google Business Profile allows you to manage multiple locations from a single account. If you have 10 or more locations, you can use bulk verification and location groups to keep everything organised.
They're the same thing. Google rebranded "Google My Business" to "Google Business Profile" in 2021. The old app was discontinued, and management now happens directly through Google Search and Google Maps.
Setting up your Google Business Profile doesn't have to be complicated. Head to business.google.com, follow the steps above, and you'll have a live listing on Google Search and Maps before the end of today. It's the single highest-leverage thing a local business can do for free.
That said, getting listed is just the starting line. The businesses that consistently appear at the top of local search results — the ones customers click on first — have fully optimised, actively managed profiles. Reviews are flowing in. Photos are fresh. Posts go up regularly. Nothing is left blank.
If you want help getting there, I'd love to work with you on it. I've been managing Google Business Profiles for local businesses across India for years, and I know what it takes to move the needle. Reach out and let's talk about what your listing needs.
